Yew (Taxus Baccata.)

There are many ancient Yew trees in the British Isles, many that have been living for 1,000 years and one in a churchyard in Fortingall, Tayside with a girth of 56 ft. estimated to be 5000 years old

Yew is not a wood commonly used in Windsor chairs, but by including some Yew it makes  a higher quality Windsor chair.

Yew  ‘thinnings’ - trimmed off yew trees, can be used for the bows, spindles and arm supports, working the timber when it is ‘green’ allows a small quantity of the creamy colour sapwood to be used with the heartwood which has a deep rich terracotta colour, eventually developing into a glorious richness as oxidation occurs.

The wood is silky to the touch once worked and polished. The tactile finish makes it a superior chair for the more discerning bottom!
